Case Study- The Virgin Hotel – New Orleans

The Virgin Hotels brand was opening their 6th hotel in New Orleans back in 2021. Three years prior to the hotel’s opening, Virgin and its technical consultants and partners had engineered a comprehensive network infrastructure that was aligned with the building’s electrical engineering. The goal was to ensure the design and implementation introduced redundancy and resiliency given that the New Orleans area can be subject to extreme weather conditions. Below are a few points to highlight:
  • Two independent ISP circuits were selected for the hotel. One of the providers has a diversified fiber path to their data centers which provides an additional layer of redundancy.
  • Two firewalls deployed in High-Availability were deployed at the site.
  • All equipment that could support two power supplies (or more) were designed so that each power supply was connected to a different UPS.
  • All UPS devices are network monitored throughout the building. Includes MDF and all IDFs.
  • Devices with a single power cable were connected to PDUs that had dual power sources. Each power source was connected to a different UPS.
  • PDUs are also network monitored.
  • All technology rooms had emergency power provisions installed.
  • All UPS devices were plugged into e-power.
  • All UPS devices were sized with a minimum calculated run time of 30 minutes. More than enough time for e-power to kick-in.
  • The Entrance Facility that housed ISP circuits also had e-power and UPS devices.
  • Wi-Fi APs are connected to network switches in IDFs. Those are also on UPS devices with e-power.
  • Before opening, each UPS was documented and tested.
  • The diversified power plan was also tested. The scenario was to mimic a hardware failure at the UPS level and ensure that not one single piece of equipment lost power due to it. Testing was successful.
  • As part of a building inspection, the generator had to be tested and by design, the diversified power plan supporting technology would also be tested. The power was cut to the building and within 5 minutes, the generator kicked in and e-power was being delivered. The test was to ensure not one single piece of IT equipment lost power during this transition to e-power. Testing was successful.
  • Testing plans were designed to repeat these exercises on a quarterly and annual basis.
This robust power and data redundancy posed real-world implications for the property. They were able to host FEMA, teams of first responders and roughly 50 employees whose homes were destroyed or damaged and had nowhere to go. Their redundancy had human-touch implications as well . . . not just for planned and expected business continuity, but for the community. Local residents, bereft of power and communications capabilities, were welcomed into the hotel to charge their devices as well as communicate with their friends and family. The property supplied large mobile device storage & charging racks that could be used to charge hundreds of devices simultaneously. The community recognized the Virgin Hotel – New Orleans as a critical component of their well-being during a catastrophic and tumultuous time. The property’s support of that community resulted in genuine appreciation and a type of marketing and advertisement that cannot be purchased.
